After nearly losing his life to hypothermia on a fishing trip, American adventurer Eddie Bauer created the world’s first down jacket in 1936. Invented out of pure necessity, Bauer named his design the Skyliner, which encased down feathers within a quilted fabric. The fit and design has continued to evolve with fashion, but the original foundation stays the same.
