After years of trial and error, including painting thick oils onto jackets which leaked and left a yellow stain, Scottish chemist Charles Macintosh created a waterproof fabric in 1823. Although the fabric changed, the color remained bright yellow, to give fisherman and other seamen better visibility. To this day, the most purchased color for raincoats is still yellow.
